Hal’s Thoughts For The Week Of April 4

I can’t believe there’s more snow on the ground! It’s not much but it’s there. Better this I guess than a big dump in late April. But I was really looking forward to getting outside and barbecuing. I guess that will have to wait a bit.

When I do get the barbecue going, I’ll have to make a trip to the North End to grab a nice steak and congratulate my old friend Zenon Klopick in person on his family’s plan to expand Tenderloin Meat & Sausage. Already one of the best shops of its kind anywhere, Tenderloin is quadrupling in size right across the street from its current location on Main. I don’t live as close anymore so I don’t get there as often. But I did find a great meat shop in my new neighbourhood–Marcello’s on Meadowood Drive near St. Vital Shopping Centre. Marcello’s chicken salami is so good, way better for you, and I think even better than his beef version. Tell me about your favorite butcher shop on Twitter, Facebook or by commenting below.

I’ve helped out a lot of good causes over the years but one of my favorites is Chicken Fest. The Winnipeg West Rotary Club has been doing it for 65 years now. I love Rotarians, they’re such good people! This year’s Chicken Fest is Tuesday, May 10th at Canad Inns Polo Park. You can dine in or take out a great chicken dinner for just $17. There’s also a delivery program starting April 28th. All proceeds go to the Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation and the Mood Disorders Association. Please check out chickenfest.ca.

Just a couple weeks left before Manitobans go to the polls. Is it just me or has the first half of this election campaign been really boring? I mean, I expect safe campaigning from the Tories, they’re ahead in the polls and it seems like victory is theirs to lose. But you’d think the New Democrats and Liberals would be swinging for the fences.

As I’ve said here before, I’m not a huge hockey fan. But it’s really too bad there won’t be any Canadian teams in the Stanley Cup playoffs this year for the first time since 1970. I guess we’ll just have to cheer for our favorite Canadian players on the various American NHL teams. Yeah, that’ll work. But just for this year, okay? Hopefully we’ll be whiting out and cheering our Jets deep into the playoffs next year.

I hope you have a fun week!
