Hal’s Thoughts For The Week Of March 13

WINNIPEG, MB. – I sure hope that old saying turns out to be true. March came in like a lion with lots of snow west and north of us. Here’s hoping it plans on going out like a lamb. My weather expert buddy Bruce Johnson says he sees no big storms on the way and he expects we’ll be back above freezing by about Thursday. Nice!

It’s time to do something about school taxes! Winnipeg School Division has passed its budget so we now know that school taxes are going up for every homeowner in the city. The good news is, the board says key programs for kids are safe. But the 3.89% increase works out to an extra $50 on a home worth a couple hundred grand. Homeowners in St. James were hardest hit with an increase of 5.6 per cent.

A big shout out to my friend Brian Labossiere at Total Flooring for helping Habitat For Humanity! Every Thursday, he’s giving Habitat Winnipeg half of the proceeds from the sale of all remnants. So please head on down to Total at Donald and Wardlaw one Thursday soon, there are lots of remnants to pick from and you’ll be helping a great cause!

Tyra Banks is the new host of America’s Got Talent. They got rid of Nick Cannon after eight years because he clashed with his bosses. It’s nice to see they’re continuing the tradition with Tyra of having a host with no discernible talent themselves.

This is scary! The Environmental Working Group says almost 70% of produce is contaminated with pesticide residues. That’s actually down 6.6% from last year. The worst for pesticide residues is Strawberries. Rounding out the “Dirty Dozen” is Spinach, Nectarines, Apples, Peaches, Celery, Grapes, Pears, Cherries, Tomatoes, Sweet Bell Peppers and Potatoes.

This video is so funny! Some expert is doing a Skype interview on a news program from his home office and his kids walk in on live TV. What’s even better is when his wife or nanny comes racing in to get the children out of there. And they said working at home would be less hassle.

And finally, Vegas magician Criss Angel is okay after losing consciousness during a straitjacket escape. He was hospitalized but was back on stage the next night successfully performing the trick. Angel says he was hemmed in, feeling trapped and couldn’t breathe. Which is exactly how I feel at this time of year when I’m doing my taxes.

Have a great week!
