WINNIPEG, MB. – I’ve wondered for a long time about my heritage. My mom is adopted and so was my dad’s mom. For years, I’ve heard about my possible aboriginal background. And so I recently went to Alison Duffy and Carla Foley at Paternity Testing Centres Of Canada (a local company) and had my DNA tested. And the answer to my questions is…YES! I was out last week helping Great West Life round up volunteers for the 2017 Canada Summer Games which will be held here in Winnipeg July 28th to August 13th. They need 6,000 helpers! That’s a huge number but I know we can do it. Click here if you’d like to volunteer.
Hasn’t this nice weather been crazy?!?!?! My weather expert buddy Bruce Johnson tells me La Nina has faded and we’re now in neutral territory which likely means more normal weather for the rest of winter and into spring. All I know is that these balmy temps have to be helping our chances of less flooding on the 20th anniversary of the 1997 flood. Take a look around, a lot of the snow is gone! They’ll hand out the Oscars Sunday night. I’ve been trying to watch as many of the Best Picture nominees as I can. I’ll be honest with you though, I fell asleep in La La Land. Sorry, I guess I’m just not a musical kinda guy. Arrival won’t win but it’s a really good movie! One of the best science fiction films I’ve seen in years!
Food labels are about to get less confusing. THANK GOD!!! Maybe this will mean fewer debates about these labels between me and my wife Jackie. The Food Marketing Institute and the Grocery Manufacturers’ Association are encouraging those in the food industry to get rid of terms like ‘sell by’ and ‘best before’ and instead use just two standard phrases: “BEST If Used By” and “USE By.” “BEST If Used By” indicates product quality and the fact that a product may not taste as expected but is still safe to consume past a certain date and “USE By” applies to products that are highly perishable and/or have a food safety concern over time. The theory behind the new labels is that eliminating customer confusion over when a product is safe to use will lead to more products being consumed instead of being unnecessarily chucked out.
