Hal’s Thoughts For The Week Of May 9

We just pulled the first tick of the season off one of our dogs last night. We’ve really noticed a lot more of them over the last few years. And I see where the province says more and more ticks are carrying Lyme disease. Be very careful with ticks and Lyme! My sister went for years not knowing what was wrong with her until a doctor in Houston thought to test her for Lyme.

It was a great weekend for horse racing! A Canadian horse named Nyquist won the Kentucky Derby. And the first races of the year were held at Assiniboia Downs. It’s great to see the Downs back for another season in a very strong position after a few years of uncertainty. If you’ve listened to me on the radio over the years, then you know I’ve always had a thing for funny horse races.

Go ahead and talk on your cell all you want, a new 30 year study says you’re not increasing your risk of brain cancer. University of Sydney researchers say phones do emit non-ionising radiation but it’s not currently thought to damage DNA. I’m relieved, I spend way too much time on my phone.

If you’re old school like me, you’ll be happy to hear Pink Floyd has decided to re-issue their entire catalogue on vinyl. It begins June 3rd with “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn,” “A Saucerful of Secrets,” the “More” soundtrack and “Ummagumma.”

Sorry to hear Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne have split up. But standby, they’ve called it quits before in their 33 years of marriage. At the other end, Dolly Parton is renewing her vows with Carl Dean at the end of the month on their 50th wedding anniversary.

“Captain America: Civil War” opened with over $180 million dollars on the weekend. That makes it the fifth biggest movie opening ever. Its release kicks off the summer blockbuster season. Here’s a list of some other big films we’ll be seeing over the next few months…

“Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” – May 20

“X-Men: Apocalypse” – May 27

“Alice Through the Looking Glass” – May 27

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” – June 3

“Finding Dory” – June 17

“Independence Day: Resurgence” – June 24

“The BFG” – July 1

“Ghostbusters” – July 15

“Star Trek Beyond” – July 22

“Jason Bourne” – July 29

“Suicide Squad” – August 5

While we’re talking movies, reports say actor Alden Ehrenreich has been picked to play young Han Solo in the “Star Wars” spin-off movie, due out in May of 2018. And that pile of fur on Donald Trump’s head will play the young Chewbacca.

Have a great week!
