Hal’s Thoughts For The Week Of October 3rd

Hello October! Cooler temps, colourful leaves, pumpkin spice…I love all of it! But let’s hope the snow and cold hold off until at least Halloween so the kids can dress up and have fun and the rest of us can enjoy a great time of year, maybe even another weekend or two at the cottage.

A new session of the Legislature is underway, right after we learned the deficit is a staggering $846 million! There were fears it would top a billion bucks so I guess the news isn’t all bad. Yes it is! An $846 million deficit is ALL bad news! I don’t know about you but I’m pissed! That crazy number is twice as big as what the Selinger government told us it was. And don’t forget, Selinger is also the guy who raised the PST. Thank goodness he and his NDP are no longer in power spending our tax dollars like crazy! I really hope the Pallister government follows through on the promise to balance the books and I hope it’s done quickly.

I’m not a hoarder but I definitely have a problem. I’ve gotten better over the years but I still have way too much stuff. Not a lot of it is junk which I guess is good but most of it is things I just don’t need. My first move is to eliminate all unwanted possessions from my home. But here’s the problem, those items are just ending up in one of my garages! And to make matters worse, a jam-packed storage tent blew across my yard in all that wind last weekend. Now I’m calling around and looking for a storage container instead of just dealing with the things that filled the tent. Help!

Congrats to Winnipeg chef Mackenzie Ferguson for winning Best Kitchen at an international cooking competition in England. He’s a grad of the culinary program at Red River College.

Which reminds me, Gold Medal Plates returns to Winnipeg November 9th at RBC Convention Centre. This stop on the road to the Canadian Culinary Championships is a fundraiser for our Olympic athletes, many of them will be there. More on Gold Medal Plates soon when I talk to my friend chef Barbara O’Hara who’s involved again this year.

Thanks for taking a few minutes to read this! Have a great week! And Happy Thanksgiving!
